And you think it only happens on TV! But yes, apparently there are some people who think spoofing e-mails are not only funny- but profitable as well.

A spoof e-mail is an e-mail that seems to have come from an official channel (i.e. PayPal, E_bay) but is actually spam. It’s like an electronic forgery of well-known companies’ e-mails to customers and clients. There are two kinds of spoof e-mails:

Phishing e-mails areĀ  the type of spoof mails that tell you to update your bank account or credit card information because their software malfunctioned or something. You are then given a link where you can electronically provide these scammers said details. Be careful about this. Click the link and you’ll find out that the website does not remotely resemble the official site of your bank or whatnot.

An e-mail worm basically infects your computers and clogs up the internet. It basically accesses the address book of a particular account and then sends mails and copies of itself to these addresses. If you get an e-mail saying that you have undeliverable mail to an address unknown to you, then you’ll know you’ve been wormed. If this happens, get an effective anti-virus.
