Cuil search engine launched

Hands down there’s no argument that Google, with all its years in the business and sophistication as a search engine, it is the best in what it does. Still, that doesn’t stop other groups from taking the search giant on. Cuil (pronounced “cool,”) is the latest search engine to hit the Internet. It’s a search engine made possible by Cuil Inc, an Internet start-up comprised by former Google engineers.

It claims that it has advancements from Google’s engine which are achieved by focusing on context and page content over links and audience traffic. The creators also claim it to be faster and wider-reaching in its indexing over Google.

For a quick and dirty test, I tried searching some common search terms and had decent results. The results were able to point me to pages and articles with relevant content.

However, trying it out on more localized search terms yielded less fruitful results, missing even the relevant URLs. It might probably need a few more months of indexing to get refined search results. Google definitely still has an advantage to localized searches since they have a robust index of pages according to language and country of origin.

Try it out and see for yourself. Visit Cuil.
